Spartanburg Herald has a picture of the two Powell boys, Steve and Robert, who were present when their par ents, Mr .and Mrs. Mielville Powell, drowned in Green River Saturday afternoon .... A four column head announces the arrest of Jesse L. Rhodes, age about 50, charged with the murder of Edward Ball, Tryon Theatre manager, on Sun day morning. Rhodes, a former political leader, chairman of the county election board and former j county accountant, is in the county jail at Columbus, held without bond, pending a hearing. Officers I say Rhodes had not admitted any- [ thing. The murder warrant was j sighed by the victim’s brother-in law; another warrant was signed by Mr. Rhodes’ daughter, Mrs. Roy Dalton, charging him with assault and battery on her mother, Mrs. Stella Streadwick Rhodes. Chief Lewis Lindsey and other members of the Tryon Police Department were assisted by the SB I in the investigation. Very little details are being given out, pending the hearing. Attorney J. Lee Laven der has been employed to repre sent the defendant. Solicitor Clarence 0. Ridings of Forest City will probably represent the state. Mechanical Engineer Speaker To Landrum Ruritans; New Plant Opens Soon The Landrum Ruritans met at the Landrum High School Thurs day at 8:30 p. m. The J. H. A. and F. F. A. Clubs planned and served dinner, under the supervision of Mrs. F. M. Littlefield. T. P. Johnson, president wel comed two new members, Joe Gen try, town clerk and Joe G. Nunn, manager of Lewis’ 5&10c store. Mr. Nunn has recently accepted duties as scoutmaster of the Land rum Boy Scouts, succeeding R. F. Morton, who has been appointed as a district counselor. J. G. Landrum introduced the following special guests of the evening, Johann Frolich, presi dent of Bommer Spring Hinge Co., and Harold Egbert, purchas ing agent for the company. Mr. Frolich expressed in behalf of the Bonner Spring Hinge Co., appre ciation for the hearty welcome and the wonderful spirit in which tne people oi Lanarum nave ac cepted the members of his com pany. He also stated that plans are for the nlant to be in full op eration in three months. J. V. Ogle introduced the main speaker, Karl P. Hamm, chief mechanical engineer of the Bom mer Spring Hinge Co. Mr. Hamm showed several types of hinges that his company manufactures. In demonstrating and explaining these to the club, he carried the members on a theoretical tour of the plant as it will be when in full production. He exolained the types of metals needed and the hundreds of processes required in the production of the numerous varieties of hinges produced by the company.
